Many of the students I work with — physics and math students, other science majors, advanced high schoolers, pre-meds, and ACT preppers — are capable but feel overwhelmed or behind. Technical classes move fast, and it’s easy to get lost after missing one key idea. My goal is to help students understand the material clearly and build skills they can use long-term.
How I Teach
My teaching style is discovery-based. I don’t lecture at students or show steps to memorize. Instead, I guide students through questions and examples so they can discover the ideas themselves.
This approach helps students understand concepts instead of memorizing formulas, remember material longer, and feel more confident solving new problems on their own. Parents often tell me their student finally understands the material and feels more prepared for exams.
In sessions, we focus on making lectures and homework make sense. I fill in gaps before they cause bigger problems, and we work through problems step by step with clear reasoning. Each session is adjusted to the student’s class, pacing, and individual needs — whether that’s prepping for a quiz, a midterm, a final, or just building confidence and reducing stress.

Rates
- In-person sessions: $50/hour
- Online sessions (Zoom): $45/hour
- Default session length is 1 hour. By request, sessions can be as short as 30 minutes (online only) or as long as 2 hours.
- Partial cost waivers are available upon demonstrated financial need.
- Payment via Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, or (for in-person) cash or check.
Scheduling & Availability
You can request a session Tuesday through Saturday at ethscott@stanford.edu. Appointments can be booked on a regular basis (weekly, twice monthly, etc.) or as needed.
Location: In-person sessions are available in the Bay Area (California) starting April 2026. Online sessions via Zoom are always available.
In-person sessions can take place at a public location (library, coffee shop, etc.) or in the student’s home. If tutoring a minor student in their home, an adult must be present.
Policies
- Cancellation: Appointments must be booked and/or cancelled at least 36 hours in advance. A 30% fee applies to late cancellations or no-shows — this covers tutor prep time and the lost opportunity to work with other students.
- Session extras: By request, I can provide session recordings (for online appointments) or written session notes and after-session practice problems.
