Escape Room Design
I design escape rooms — the whole thing, from narrative concept to puzzle engineering to set construction. There’s a surprising amount of physics thinking involved in building a good escape room: you’re designing a system of interlocking constraints, managing information flow, and thinking carefully about how people interact with physical objects under pressure. It’s also just deeply fun.

Bike Touring & Cycling Resources
The Stanford Spokes ride — nearly 4,000 miles from San Francisco to D.C. — was the longest, but it wasn’t the only one. I’ve done several extended bike trips, and along the way I’ve developed resources and route guides that I make available to other touring cyclists.

Lab64 Makerspace Builds
Lab64 is Stanford Electrical Engineering’s open makerspace — soldering stations, oscilloscopes, laser cutters, 3D printers, the works. I use it to build things that don’t fit neatly into a class or a research lab.

Educational Outreach
Teaching doesn’t stop at tutoring. I’m involved in several outreach programs that bring science education to students who might not otherwise have access to it:
Stanford Splash — I teach classes through Stanford ESP, a program that brings 8th-12th graders to Stanford’s campus for a weekend of classes taught by undergrads.
SUPS Outreach — Through the Stanford University Physics Society, I participate in community outreach, teaching physics lessons at under-resourced middle and high schools in the Bay Area — especially schools that don’t offer physics classes to their students.
Stanford Spokes — The educational side of the 4,000-mile ride: hands-on STEM workshops for pre-K through 12th grade students in under-resourced communities across 10 states. I led a storytelling workshop at Stanford Sierra Camp. More on the Spokes page.
Flight Training
I’m currently working toward my private pilot license. Flying is one of those things that combines physics, decision-making, and spatial awareness in a way that nothing else does. It’s also an incredible way to see the world.

Visual Art
I make art in a lot of different forms. I paint occasionally, but I don’t think of myself as a painter so much as someone who follows an idea into whatever medium fits it. It’s one of the few things I do that has nothing to do with equations, and that’s part of why it matters to me.
My work has been published in The ITALIC Atlas, a guidebook created by students in Stanford’s ITALIC program documenting global movements of artists, artworks, and ideas. My piece, Re: Penitent Smith, is a multimedia sculpture built around a piece of digital painting I made in a notetaking app — pairing quasi-scripture with imagery inspired by Jean-Jacques Henner’s Penitent Magdalene to explore the complexity of multifaith identity.

Drone Photography & Aerial Surveying
I started flying drones as the drone specialist for the Wasatch Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS), where I used aerial surveying to help preserve hundred-year-old willows during a new high school campus build and partnered with Utah DNR to develop a new protocol for ecological transect data collection.
Since then I’ve kept flying — partly for the photography, partly because there’s something about seeing a landscape from 400 feet that changes how you think about it.

Science Communication
I fell in love with science watching Carl Sagan and Neil deGrasse Tyson. The way they told the stories of science is what made me want to understand the world in the first place. This is my attempt to do the same thing.
I create general-audience science content on the Ethan David Scott YouTube channel. These aren’t tutoring videos — they’re standalone explainers aimed at anyone who’s curious. A kid who stumbles onto one of these the way I stumbled onto Cosmos. A grad admissions committee that wants to see how I communicate. A science museum looking for someone who can make hard ideas feel alive.
